The automotive display has grown against the trend. In 22H1, the global automotive display panel shipped nearly 90 mil., a YoY increase of about 5.6%

In 22H1, the global automotive industry will continue to be affected by the shortage of automotive-required chips. At the same time, influenced by a convergence of factors such as the Russian-Ukrainian conflict and the impact of the epidemic lockdown in Changchun, Shanghai, and other auto industry clusters in mainland China, the production and sales of the global automotive market have further declined. According to Sigmaintell’s statistics, in 22H1, the global automotive shipment was about 37.66 million, a YoY decrease of about 10.7%. Although under the influence of many adverse factors, especially the lockdown of Shanghai in the second quarter, it severely impacted the shipment of global automotive displays, which also slowed down the pace of OEMs' demand for automotive displays.

However, with the development of the intelligent connected vehicle, especially NEV, ushered in explosive growth, the automotive display, as the window of human-computer interaction of smart cars, plays an increasingly important role in the user experience, which has driven the automotive display market to enter a period of rapid development. In the first half of 2022, the global sales of automotive displays will maintain a relatively high growth rate. According to Sigmaintell’s statistics, in the first half of 2022, the global shipment of before-vehicle-display panels was about 85.81 mil. (only before), a YoY increase of about 5.6%.

Following the trend of intelligence-connected vehicles, panel makers have increased their automotive business with their strengths and competed in new tracks.

According to Sigmaintell's survey data, the global shipments of automotive display panels in 22H1 are about 85.81 mil. (only before), a YoY increase of about 5.6%. With the help of intelligence-connected vehicles, as an essential hardware facility for human-computer interaction, the trend of the large-screen and multi-screen display is increasingly popular, and the scale and added value of vehicle display products are increasing. According to their advantages, major panel makers have adopted active diversification strategies, adjusted their production layout, and increased the exploration of the depth of display products in the cockpit. Recently, major panel makers have been deepening communication and cooperation with OEMs. Their efforts to increase investment in automotive display-related fields are stabilizing and expanding market shares and pursuing breakthroughs in high-value-added products such as complex modules.

From the perspective of panel maker competition, the specific performance is as follows:

By readjusting the new "2+1+N" strategy, Tianma has positioned the automotive business as one of the company's two core businesses: strengthening the automotive business while continuously increasing investment in the automotive field and strengthening cooperation with OEMs. Tianma is accelerating the layout of the EV track. Although shipments in Q2 were significantly affected by the epidemic lockdown in Shanghai and declined month-on-monthquarter-on-quarter. With the strong market demand and its good customer base, Tianma's automotive display shipments in 22H1 will be about 13.6 mil., an increase of about 7.3% YoY, and continue to rank first in the before-market with a market share of 15.9%.

JDI

With strong market demand for automotive displays and growth in orders for products such as HUDs, JDI saw a significant increase in shipments in Q1, but in Q2, it was also affected by the sluggish shipments caused by the lockdown in Shanghai. According to Sigmaintell’s survey data, in the first half of 2022, the shipment of the automotive display is about 12.3 mil., a YoY increase of 12.3%, returning to second place in the before-market with a market share of 14.3%.

BOE

Relying on leading innovative display technology and huge capacity advantages, BOE keeps upgrading its smart cockpit solutions and insists on actively expanding strategic cooperation with OEMs. In particular, driven by the early accumulation of the EV market and the increase in the production of related customers, BOE has maintained rapid growth in automotive shipments. Its OLED, multi-screen, 27-inch and other large-size automotive products have received orders from customers and have been gradually mass-produced. In the first half of 2022, BOE's shipments of display panels in before market were 10.6 mil., a substantial increase of about 46.4% YoY. In addition, BOE still has a shipment of 4 million pieces in the after market, making it the fastest-growing display panel supplier in the automotive display market.

AUO

Affected by the off-season effect of the global auto industry in Q1, especially the unsatisfactory performance of the European market, following the impact of unfavorable factors such as the Russian-Ukrainian conflict in Q2, AUO's automotive display panel shipments in 22Q1 were about 10.1 mil., down 11.8% YoY. However, the proportion of its LTPS LCD products has increased significantly, accounting for about 31.7% of its shipments in Q1, which has helped its automotive business revenue to account for 14.0% of its total revenue in Q2.

LGD

Driven by abandoning the a-Si technology product market and pursuing high profitability, LGD continues to expand the proportion of LTPS LCD product shipments and increase the layout of large-size products. In the first half of 2022, the shipment of automotive display panels is about 8.26 mil., down about 13.0% YoY, but the proportion of its LTPS LCD has increased from 22% last year to 50%, and its high-end OLED automotive products still maintain the first market share.

Driven by supply and demand, the global penetration rate of LTPS LCD panels is expected to exceed 20%

From the perspective of the development trend of technical specifications of automotive display products, with the increased exploration in the cockpit, the automotive display is developing in the direction of high-resolution, large-sizes, narrow-frame, and touch-integrated screens. In addition, due to the continuous weakening of the demand for LTPS LCD panels in other applications such as smartphones, panel makers are actively promoting more capacity to shift to medium-sized applications such as automotive. Under the active promotion of panel makers such as LGD, JDI, Sharp, AUO, Tianma, TCL CSOT, etc. The shipment performance of LTPS LCD vehicle products was eye-catching, and the product penetration rate increased rapidly. According to Sigmaintell’s latest estimates, the global shipment of LTPS LCD vehicle display panels will be about 35.1 million in 2022, and the penetration rate will increase to about 19.6%.

According to Sigmaintell’s data, the global demand for before-automotive display panels will reach 180 million in 2022, a YoY increase of about 10.0%, and will maintain a compound growth rate of more than 6.0% in the next five years. In terms of the technical characteristics of the automotive display, the automotive display is an indispensable interactive window for the smart cockpit, and its technology is constantly improving. At present, the application layout of LTPS LCD automotive display panels has gradually formed a scale, and its development trend is very clear. In addition, for high-end display products such as AMOLED displays, Mini-LED BLU, and Micro-LEDs, major panel makers are also accelerating the development progress in the automotive field, and gradually achieving mass production, which will become the development direction of high-end automotive displays in the future.
